This hotel sits below the superior waterside Wyndham in the ranks. Although both are dependable midrange hotels, this property could use more carpet shampoo and elbow grease. Most prefer the Wyndham's notable waterfront location. Still, this hotel is convenient to art galleries and the convention center.
This 15-story tower, near the Mud Hen's Stadium (the AAA baseball farm team), has the usual marble lobby and what seems to be the mandatory color scheme in most of Ohio: hunter green and burgundy, played out in classic styles. American fare is served at the smart grill and
in the adjoining lounge and lobby bar. Serving three meals daily, the restaurant's soft contemporary lines are a welcome counterpoint to the traditional guest rooms.
The fourth-floor fitness center's assortment of weight and aerobics machines will keep most guests happy, but there is no pool or sauna. Guest passes to the nearby YMCA prove more useful to dedicated fitness buffs. In addition to its own well-appointed and flexible 11,000 sq ft of meeting space, the hotel markets the 75,000 sq ft of space at the SeaGate Centre, getting the larger convention market by default. The
lobby-level business center pleases working travelers with a computer, Internet access, and fax and photocopy capabilities.
Attractive dark-wood furniture, matching drapes and spreads, ceiling borders and plush hunter-green carpeting make guest rooms here richer-looking than the average standard room. Large rooms come with sitting areas with sofas and chairs, desks with ergonomic chairs, phones with data ports and voice mail, high-speed Internet access (for a fee), TVs in armoires, coffeemakers, and mirrored closets with irons and ironing boards. The tiled baths supply hair dryers and second phones. Larger corner rooms go for the same price. Guests on the two premium-level floors have direct access to the convention center, and to an attractive lounge with a patio. Pets are permitted, and room service operates during regular hours.
This is a worthwhile option when low rates are available. Note: Baseball fans can eye the stadium from top floors, but many tourists prefer the riverside location of the Wyndham.
