This hotel is a quiet upscale alternative to the Westin and Sheraton at Our Lucaya mega-complex, favored by veterans of the Bahamian travel scene. Situated in a charming cluster of four-story town houses hugging the waterfront, some 300 yards from the beach, it offers larger rooms than its imposing neighbor, a higher degree of security, quieter surroundings and better service. Additionally, guests staying here have access to the beach at Our Lucaya and can pay to use the spa, fitness center and other facilities, which means the premises are even more tranquil when the majority of guests decamp for a day spent at its larger neighbor. A gingerbread portico marks the entrance to a tasteful lobby with beige tile, mahogany trim, palms and rattan furniture. Renovations have updated the lobby and furniture has
been replaced, too.
A terrace bar serves light lunches, and guests sip cocktails beneath oversized umbrellas. Yellowtails Bar and Grill serves excellent Bahamian, American and Danish fare, but it has been upstaged by the The Ferry House Restaurant, where fine Continental cooking is offered for lunch and dinner along with an extensive wine list. A breakfast restaurant was added in 2005.
Guests enjoy the small rectangular pool set into a slate sundeck and the large bubbling whirlpool that actually is hot, unlike the tepid germ baths that pass
as whirlpools at most other Caribbean hotels. Two more pools—one quiet, the other with a swim-up bar—are also on the premises, and guests can use the nearby Westin fitness center for a $10 fee. A shuttle whisks golfers to nearby links, and all activities can be arranged through the hotel.
The well-appointed, 640-sq-ft accommodations are extremely large and come with kings or two double beds, air conditioning, Italian tile floors, white rattan furniture, muted tropical prints, striped drapes, TVs, phones, safes and ceiling fans. Wet bars come with refrigerators and coffeemakers. Private, furnished balconies offer pool and marina views. The best choices are end rooms with both views, and smoke-free rooms can be requested. The 94 suites are slightly larger in size but furnished to a more deluxe level with hardwood furniture, four-poster kings or a double with a twin, finer linens, cotton waffle-weave robes, dual-line phones with data ports, stocked bars, espresso machines and twice-daily housekeeping. Continental breakfast is delivered to a lockbox in the door each morning. Children under 12 stay free.
Friendly staff and good rates make this hotel popular with those who shun larger, busier resorts in favor of European ambience.
