Exterior

This hotel, in a modern concrete building on a busy street just north of the center, provides value in a compact setting that blends this chain's efficiency and economy with regional flair (read: English is not a requirement for employment).

The lobby lounge, with low seating and a car rental desk, is clean and neat. Its best feature is the airy atrium lounge, with an ornate mosaic fountain and garden appeal.

Dining is in a handsome international restaurant decorated with traditional screens, and in a lovely Moroccan room with a polychrome ceiling and elaborately tiled walls. The cafe turns out basic fare, but the impressive breakfast buffet is included in the room rate. Nightly, a pianist creates a relaxed mood in the bar.

A sole meeting room can host up to 120, and wireless Internet access is available in the lobby for no charge. Recreational devotes are directed to a nearby pool and fitness center off-site.

Room

The standardized accommodations are bland but comfortable, with tile floors, dated yet shiny blue fabrics, modern laminate and wood furniture (including Japanese-style platform beds with spongy mattresses), refrigerators, and small mosaic-tiled combination baths with large mirrors. The furnishings need a coat of varnish, and the art is minimal. Air-conditioning is available in all rooms. Amenities range from free high-speed Internet to minibars and safes. The quietest rooms are in the -01 and -02 series, but street noise still seems to find its way through all the nooks and crannies here.

Pets are allowed, and a limited room-service menu is always available. Maintenance standards seem all but forgotten. For now, the Toubkal offers a cleaner and brighter environment for shoestring travelers, but tour groups and package rates still lure unsuspecting guests.

    In business for 40 years, the Ramada franchising company has a portfolio of nearly 900 hotels in 25 countries. It caters to market segments within the midrange category by differentiating its brands, which are Ramada Limited, Ramada Inn and Ramada Plaza Hotels and Resorts. All properties stress service, value and innovative programs.

    One of Ramada's programs allows children younger than 18 to stay free in the same room as an adult family member. Many Ramada hotels also offer children's meals and services. A second program encourages families and businesses to hold reunions, weddings and corporate training sessions at the hotels by offering special group rates.

    The Ramada Limited hotels are designed for budget travelers who don't need a restaurant or lounge on-site. The properties are located near highways and in suburbs, cities and small towns. A light Continental breakfast is part of the room tariff, and amenities often include a swimming pool, meeting space, and data ports and voice mail in the guest rooms.
