This place is perfect for honeymooners and hideaway-seekers. It lacks the celebrity draw of Pink Sands or the French savoir faire of the Romora, but for those seeking an intimate tropical retreat on a fantastic beach this is one of the best choices on the island.
Once a residence, this historic inn is reached via a long drive winding through extensive lawns and Causarina trees. New owners paid painstaking attention to detail when restoring the former winter residence. Chintz-covered rattan, plants, prints and a shell collection fill the sitting room, which contains a wine rack and glasses for guests. Guests enjoy heart-stopping views of the pink beach and sea. Details like fresh flowers with breakfast make each visitor feel like a house guest.
Generous and moderately priced gourmet dinners can be made to order and are served in the casual dining room or on the upper veranda. The atmosphere is decidedly casual as evidenced by the honor bar and guests' free range of the kitchen and laundry room.
Wooden decks cascade past the freshwater pool to striped umbrellas in the sand. Snorkeling equipment is on loan, and boat or golf cart rentals, fishing and diving excursions can be arranged.
The bright, comfortable guest rooms are situated in the main building and in the hilltop villa, where the rooms are slightly larger and more expensive. All have painted white wood ceilings, tiled floors, chocolate brown wicker furniture and summery chintz fabrics. Ceiling fans supplement the air conditioning,
books and magazines take the place of TVs, and the sitting areas are often forsaken in favor of the king or two twin beds piled high with armloads of pillows. Recently renovated baths are small but brightly lit and very clean. A new water system provides fresh spring water. Seven of the villas have tubs. Some rooms open to terraces and patios with excellent bluewater vistas. The duplex villa opposite the main building comprises two suites with tropical decor, hardwood ceilings, fans, coffeemakers, refrigerators and sliding glass doors to furnished decks.
This is a great choice if beach access, good views, secluded surroundings and quality accommodations are sought. This hotel is closed from early September to mid-November.
