The birthplace of Sacramento, the park houses the fort and trading post founded by John Sutter. These buildings were destroyed during the gold rush but have since been rebuilt. Exhibits feature copper and blacksmith shops, a bakery, a prison, a doctor's office, and dining, living and livestock quarters. Children love the historic atmosphere at the fort, especially during Living History Days, when costumed guides lead special events. Living History Days take place in March, April, June, September and November. Daily 10 am-5 pm (last self-guided audio tour at 4 pm). US$4 adults, US$2 children, free for children younger than 6 (more for special events). 2701 L St., Sacramento. Phone 916-445-4422. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=485.
