Salt Island Travel Guide

Salt Island Guide Overview

Located between Cooper and Peter Islands (south of Tortola), Salt Island itself doesn't offer a lot. The two salt-evaporation ponds are perhaps the most notable features, although they're not much to visit. It's the sea surrounding the island that's the draw, offering excellent diving and snorkeling. The wreck of the RMS Rhone is one of the most popular dive sites in the British Virgin Islands. A mail ship that went down in a hurricane in 1867, the Rhone lies on a slope with the stern in water shallow enough for snorkelers. The wreck is covered with coral and attracts many fish. In fact, a queen angelfish might serve as your guide—they have been fed so frequently that they are almost tame. The wreck is part of Rhone National Marine Park, which also encompasses Dead Chest Island. Both Salt and Dead Chest Islands are accessible only by chartered or private boat.
