Hotels in San Diego run the gamut from luxurious to serviceable. Downtown locations offer easy to moderate accessibility to the waterfront, the historic Gaslamp Quarter and several major shopping meccas. Suburban hotels, especially those in La Jolla, attract those who enjoy calm affluence, demand beauty all around them and don't mind commuting a bit to such attractions as Balboa Park and SeaWorld.
There are ample bed-and-breakfasts, inns and historic small hotels as well as national chain properties and beachfront or cliffside accommodations. Resort hotels abound—many have separate cottage or lanai units, outdoor tennis courts and outdoor pools. Cheaper digs can be found in the convenient but less interesting Mission Valley section of town. Charming long-term rentals and inns abound in Coronado Island.
Summers are the busiest times for most hotels and attractions. Book well in advance if you're visiting June to mid-September.
