Boutique lodgings are not Negril's forte, but this lighthearted operation is finding a loyal following attracted to its fair rates and fine offerings. From the cozy reception area to the well-kept rooms, the warm Jamaican hospitality lets guests feel immediately at home.
Norma's Restaurant upholds its reputation (based on a variety of awards and a culinary inspiration considered the Jamaican Julia Child) with pride. New-world cuisine teases the mind for a definition, but the taste buds know right away that the combination of island
flavors and spices is wholly Jamaican. Fresh bread and pastries are baked on-site, and ingredients are never more than a stone's throw from their origination on this island. A passionate fusion of Asian and Latin recipes shapes the menu served at this charming thatch-roof, beachside location.
The beach sports rows of lounge chairs, and a refreshing dip in the pool is the favored apres-sun-bathing activity. The sundeck is lacking in space but makes up for it in views. The whirlpool is the site for romantic sunset relaxation. Fitness buffs are
left high and dry, but can visit the Swept Away gym nearby for a supplemental charge. Guests can connect to the Internet by trekking to the lobby and using the slow, overpriced computers.
Accommodations range from spacious rooms to more commodious two-room suites. All were undergoing renovations at inspection and sport tile floors, warm fabrics and natural lighting. Two-poster beds, floral artwork and large mirrors are considerate additions, but of course, the basics are in place with TVs, phones, air-conditioning, ceiling fans, coffeemakers and safes. Baths offer plenty of towels and hot water. Do-it-yourselfers appreciate kitchens and refrigerators found in suites. Room 6 is the latest to be remodeled and therefore is the one to book.
Room service delivers until 10:30 pm each evening. Pets are not allowed. Maintenance and housekeeping do an excellent job keeping things in shape. A weeklong minimum stay is imposed during the holiday season.
