Austin Safety & Travel Security Guide

Austin Safety Guide

Austin is no more dangerous than most U.S. cities of its size. Most of the areas traveled by visitors are reasonably safe, but use common sense and be alert after dark. The crowds on Sixth Street on weekend evenings can harbor pickpockets. Unlit, deserted areas in the parks and in downtown should be avoided after dark. Ask your hotel's concierge or at the front desk for advisories concerning the areas and attractions you wish to visit.

Dos & Don'ts

Do look both ways before crossing the street. Austin drivers are aggressive to the point of running red lights. Always assume cars have the right-of-way; that's what the drivers do.

Don't worry too much about dressing for dinner. Austin is a casual town, and clean jeans are often all that's expected.

Don't give money to panhandlers at traffic lights. These characters may look desperate, but Austin has its share of social service organizations. A simple "Sorry, no" should suffice.

Do try to visit one of the many parks in and around Austin. Town Lake can be crowded on weekend mornings and weekdays after 5 pm. There are plenty of shady spots to rest, even in summer, but make sure to carry water if you intend to exercise in the heat. Enchanted Rock State Park is a gem.

Do get yourself some barbecue. Brisket is considered the standard, but ribs and sausage can both be sublime. The best tactic is to get a group together and order up a little bit of everything. Everybody has a favorite. Find your own.

Do check local listings to see what's going on in town when you're there. Weekends in Austin are filled with all sorts of festivals, street fairs, free music shows and more. Don't miss out on the fun.
