Indianapolis Safety & Travel Security Guide

Indianapolis Safety Guide

Indianapolis is a relatively safe city, but, like in much of the rest of the country, tough economic times have caused a rise in purse thefts and car break-ins. It's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, to lock car doors and to keep valuables out of sight. Park in designated lots or in well-lit areas on the street. Take extra precautions around ATMs—try to use them in areas that are well-traveled and well-lit, if possible.

One area to avoid after dark is Brightwood, the neighborhood northeast of downtown bounded by Interstate 70, Keystone Avenue, 25th Street and the old Monon railroad tracks. It's known for drug trafficking. Fortunately, there's no reason for tourists to go there. Although most residents never hesitate to travel east or west on Washington Street, for example, petty crime can be more prevalent there.

Dos & Don'ts

Don't expect to find taxis roaming the city, especially outside downtown. If you don't rent a car, plan to telephone ahead for a cab or enlist the help of your hotel in getting anywhere outside of walking distance.

Don't put coins in parking meters on Saturday or Sunday; metered parking is free on weekends and after 6 pm on weekdays.

Do buy tickets to the Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400 or U.S. Grand Prix. Try to get seats in the outside corners to get the widest view of the track, or across from the start/finish to watch the pit action. But be aware that you won't be able to see everything no matter where you sit. It's the experience of being there that counts.

Do consider going to the Speedway early in May for qualifications. If the weather's good, you'll see action all day from the grandstand and picnics and parties if you choose an infield vantage point. (On opening day, lots of the local Kentucky Fried Chicken branches open early to serve the fans.)

Do visit Broad Ripple for an evening of barhopping but don't expect to stroll the street with a drink in your hand. Unlike some areas that let it go, the laws against it are generally enforced in Indianapolis.

Do consider being in Indy for the annual holiday lighting of the Circle downtown. Live entertainment and impromptu caroling add to an atmosphere tinged with excitement, and the holiday spirit makes this a fine way to welcome the season.

Don't think you must be with a child to enjoy the Indianapolis Museum for Children. All kids and kids-at-heart will enjoy seeing the amazing displays and special exhibits there.
