Madrid Safety & Travel Security Guide

Madrid Safety Guide

Madrid is one of the worst cities in Europe for theft. Pay close attention to your belongings at all times and never leave a bag unattended. Do not brandish expensive cameras or phones. Professional pickpockets operate in busy cafes, bars and the metro, and muggings are all too common at nighttime. Avoid walking around the area surrounding Retiro (Madrid's central park) at night—it has become a hot spot for muggings. Cars are often broken into, so never leave any valuables inside, especially in plain view.

The city center is relatively safe during the day and at night. Madrilenos love to be out on the street, even in the early hours of the morning—a cultural phenomenon that provides safety in numbers.

The city's red-light districts should be avoided, especially the Calle de la Luna area just north of the Gran Via and the road running just inside the southern edge of the Casa de Campo.

Dos & Don'ts

Do the bar crawl in Calle Argumosa with its great terraces, located right in Madrid's ethnic barrio. The atmosphere is friendly and prices are moderate.

Don't buy CDs and DVDs at the black market. Vendors are everywhere (and they know how to run faster than police). Keep in mind that they hardly make any money but are victims of mafia-like organizations taking most of the money.

Do ignore the taxi driver snatching you in the arrival hall of the airport. You will pay dearly for the privilege of not waiting your turn outside.

Don't clap your hands during flamenco performances. The clapping is part of the whole thing and only experts in the public should join in.

Don't expect romance because a woman greets you with kisses on your cheeks. It is about as common as shaking hands.

Don't trust green traffic lights. Madrilenos take them as hints that other cars and pedestrians may run red lights.

Don't wear socks with slippers and long shorts. That is a fashion no-no in Madrid.

Do visit the Egyptian Templo de Debod at dusk to enjoy the most gorgeous sunset Madrid has to offer.

Do relax in the Arabian baths Medina Mayrit in Calle Atocha 14 and enjoy 90 minutes of luxury away from the noise and bad air of Madrid.

Do enjoy tea time in the lobby bar of the the outrageously luxurious Ritz Hotel. The atmosphere alone is worth the 22 euros spent on delicious teas and English sandwiches.
