Mazatlan Safety & Travel Security Guide

Mazatlan Safety Guide

Although Mazatlan poses no great hazards, use common sense and take the same precautions you would in any major city. Watch your wallet and purse in crowded areas, such as the beaches and markets. Do not leave your belongings unattended on the beach. Do not start counting a roll of bills in a public place. Special events such as Carnaval and Semana Santa (Holy Week) attract visiting pickpockets and purse-snatchers.

Dos & Don'ts

Do visit downtown in early morning or evening when the traffic noise is tolerable. And don't forget to wear your walking shoes.

Do watch where you walk. Workmen can be notoriously devil-may-care when it comes to covering open manholes or blocking off other such hazards to pedestrians.

Do be careful of sidewalk vendors offering free food and tours—they are really selling condos or timeshares.

Don't miss the opportunity to explore Mazatlan's neighborhoods. A pulmonia ride through the El Cid development will give you an eye-catching glimpse at contemporary upscale Mexican architecture.

Do spread your towel on Playa Norte with the locals if you want to get away from the hotel beaches. Vendors will go by selling snacks and cold drinks, and refreshments also are available at several palapa (palm frond-shaded) restaurants.
