Considered
tranquila by Mexicans, Oaxaca is generally a safe city, especially during the day. But be extra careful in the area south of the Zocalo, where violent crime has been reported. Although bodily injury is not common, professional thieves abound, especially in crowded tourist areas and marketplaces. People who earn their living by picking pockets and slashing backpacks are very skilled at their trade and have many tricks up their sleeves. Don't wear flashy jewelry or carry valuables. Public protests are common but usually peaceful. It's best to avoid them, however, in case they turn violent.
Dos & Don'ts
Do pack a Spanish phrase book. Learning some of the language will help make your trip to Oaxaca easier and more enjoyable.
Don't wear shorts inside churches, and don't use a flash when photographing inside churches.
Do say por favor (please) and gracias (thank you). Oaxacans are very polite and formal.
Don't flaunt valuables. Oaxaca is one of the poorest states in Mexico.
Do ask permission before taking photographs of any people.
