Pittsburgh Safety & Travel Security Guide

Pittsburgh Safety Guide

Pittsburgh is fortunate to have a low crime rate compared with other metropolitan areas, but you should still take commonsense precautions. At night, park and walk in well-lit places with plenty of activity. Be prepared for the rowdy weekend crowds strolling along in Oakland, the Strip or Carson Street on the South Side. Ask your hotel's concierge or front-desk staff about the relative safety of specific areas of the city.

For any emergency, dial 911 and stay on the line. The emergency system can track your call location if you dial from a landline phone.

Dos & Don'ts

Do be aware of the "Pittsburgh Left." The term describes a fast left turn, in front of oncoming traffic, when a stoplight changes from red to green. Turn signals are a rarity.

Don't make fun of the Pittsburgh accent or use of the word "yinz" for "you all."

Don't be afraid to ask for very specific directions. Pittsburgh can seem confusing to first-time visitors.

Don't expect much partying on weeknights. Pittsburghers work hard during the week and play late on the weekends.

Don't be surprised if you get lost when driving on Pittsburgh's Belt System. The series of routes ring the city at varying distances, and even locals find the color-coded sign system confusing. The Purple Belt rings the downtown area, and it will lead you to major attractions.
