Ponce doesn't have the big-city crime problems associated with San Juan, but take the usual precautions. Tourists aren't typically the targets of crime, but it is always best to keep your money and credit cards tucked away in a lap pack or secured wallet, and don't leave your valuables unattended at the beach.

Dos & Don'ts
Don't pronounce Ponce as
Pons, rather
PON-say.
Do know that Poncenos are extremely proud of their southern coastal town, which is an autonomous municipality, thus they often have views that are different from the rest of the island.
Do make a point to attend the Ponce Carnival, which is a major event held annually in Ponce during February and March, where you can see the colorful vegigante masks.
Don't expect to find as much activity and nightlife in Ponce as you do in San Juan.
Do apply plenty of sunscreen while spending time in Ponce, as shaded areas are found few and far between throughout the dry, coastal town.
