Formerly the Sofitel Ia Ora, this all-bungalow resort is set beside Moorea's best beach in a six-hectare coconut grove at the island's northeast point, a five-minute drive from the airport. It was closed for nearly a year in 2006 for a complete overhaul, from which it has emerged as Moorea's top hotel.
Guests are welcomed under a thatch roof covering the reception, activities, and car and bicycle rental desks.
Beside Moorea's best beach and lagoon, and with an unparalleled
view of Tahiti across the Sea of the Moon, the main bar and restaurant serves international fare for lunch and dinner under another thatch-roofed structure. Nearby under its own thatch lean-tos, the gourmet K Restaurant is a romantic delight for dinner, with sand floor, soft lighting, and staff in traditional Tahitian costume. Another dining room away from the beach provides breakfast.
Activities are centered at the infinity-edge pool, Moorea's finest beach, and its most colorful lagoon. Guests can use complimentary kayaks, canoes, peddle boats, Windsurfers and snorkeling gear, or pay for diving,
water skiing, lagoon excursions, day sails, and island explorations. A small but full-service spa is on site.
Picking up the bright colors of Paul Gauguin's Tahitian paintings, orange and yellow accents highlight the accommodations. Tops are 19 over-water bungalows added during the renovations, followed by 20 pre-existing over-waters which were substantially upgraded. The new units have larger baths and decks, and romantic mosquito nets fall over their king-size beds. All over-water units have glass floor panels for fish-viewing and decks with stairs leading into the clear lagoon, but only a handful face Tahiti directly. Among the land-based units, 18 deluxe beach bungalows have unimpeded Tahiti views and are preferable to the least expensive garden bungalows, which do not. Air conditioners, TVs, phones, desks, minibars, coffeemakers, hair dryers, safes, irons and ironing boards are standard throughout.
The hotel's bragging rights include the island's best white-sand beach, most colorful lagoon and spectacular view of Tahiti on the horizon.
