Originally established as an educational resource, the park has since become a primary tourist destination (more than 40,000 tourists visit each year). It is about an hour's drive from St. John's and is home to a wide variety of native plants and animals. The park has a network of boardwalks from which visitors can observe wildlife ranging from Newfoundland marten and woodland caribou to bald eagles.
