Almost without exception, the accommodations in Sydney are clean and the proprietors friendly. The most desirable places to stay may be in The Rocks or Darling Harbour and the Central Business District, where all the action is. Of course prices are higher in those areas, too. Kings Cross offers cheaper alternatives and is an easy train or taxi ride from the business district. Although part of it is a red-light district, it's busy before midnight, so you're unlikely to encounter any problems. We recommend that you make hotel reservations well in advance, particularly during the peak season, which is generally October-March.
