Sylhet Travel Guide

Sylhet Guide Overview

This city lies in a hilly tea-growing region similar to Darjeeling, India. Sylhet's scenic valley is filled with lakes surrounded by terraced tea plantations, beautiful flora and interesting fauna (migratory birds from the Himalaya spend the winter there). Be sure to visit Shah Jalal Shrine (Darga e-Shah Jalal) and Shah Eid-gah Shrine (2 mi/3 km from town, one of the oldest places of worship in Asia). The Palace of Gour Govinda is also worth seeing. If possible, attend a performance of the colorful, rhythmic Manipuris dances held during the festivals of Rash Leela (February) and the Colors of Doljatra (April). Other area attractions include Madhabkunda Waterfall, a collection of stone monuments north of town (near Jaintia) and tea plantations. We think that three nights are needed to do this area justice. 125 mi/200 km northeast of Dhaka.
