Accommodations tend to be either high-end or budget, with few choices in between. The large resorts offer beautiful rooms, stunning public areas and a wide range of activities and amenities. They are exceptional and expensive. Your money buys more than a typical hotel room in most cases, however. The freestanding, thatch-roof bungalow is the most common form of accommodation at the big resorts. They generally come in three forms: garden bungalow (away from the water—least expensive), beach bungalow (on the water—more expensive) and the famed over-water bungalow (raised on stilts above the lagoon—most expensive). Even if you have to spend some of your children's college money, we recommend you spend at least one night in an over-water bungalow. The breeze and play of light off the water is incredible, and some come equipped with a see-through coffee table so you can watch the fish from the comfort of your living room.
