On 14 May 1948, the leaders of the Jewish community in Palestine gathered in the hall of the former home of Tel Aviv's first mayor, Meir Dizengoff, to hear David Ben-Gurion proclaim the establishment of the State of Israel. In 1978, the hall was restored, inaugurated and opened to the public. Visitors can listen to a tape of the actual proclamation ceremony. The building also hosts the Bible Museum, with permanent and changing exhibitions showcasing Israeli and international artists' take on biblical subjects.
