Tepotzotlan is home to the church of St. Francis Xavier—now the National Museum of the Viceregal Period. The church embodies the highly embellished Churrigueresque style and houses religious paintings, statues, pictures and antiques dating from the colonial period. Much of the church was built by local Indians, and pre-Hispanic motifs are scattered throughout. This town is the venue for some of Mexico's most lavish pastorelas, traditional Christmas performances that date back to medieval times. 22 mi/35 km north of Mexico City.
