The 15-story Coast Bastion Inn overlooks the waterfront on the heart of downtown Nanaimo. Erected in 1985, the hotel takes its name from a wooden Hudson's Bay Company fort dating from 1853 directly across the street. The new Vancouver Island Conference Center, scheduled to open in 2008, is two blocks away and the Port Theater is around the corner. The terminals of the seaplanes and high-speed passenger ferries from Vancouver are a short walk away, but the Departure Bay car ferry terminal is 3.5
