The decidedly upscale Fairmont Mayakoba was inaugurated in May 2006 as the first hotel in the Mayakoba luxury resort development located about 45 minutes south of Cancun in the heart of the Riviera Maya. Outclassed by the regal little Rosewood Mayakoba, which opened in early 2008, this resort spans 45 acres of prime beachfront and is built around a series of blue-water canals used to transport guests around the complex, adding to the exotic appeal.
