This tiny tropical Eden has new owners, but the winning arrangement of beautiful-garden-meets-B&B is still intact. The grounds, dotted with rare and beautiful plants, rival even those at The Gardens. The hotel did sustain some damage during 2005's horrific hurricane season, but now everything is looking great.
Comprising four white buildings with 15 suites and three separate cottages, this tidy complex is reached via a gravel drive. Inside, the lobby looks like an art gallery with wrought-iron pieces, hardwood floors and wing chairs. The inn has no dining room, but Continental breakfast is served every morning in the lobby,
and a number of restaurants in the neighborhood provide door-to-door delivery.
Guests relax in the courtyard with its unique fountain pool and whirlpool. A lily pond lies nearby, and guests may rinse the sand off their feet in the outdoor shower. Brick walkways line the grounds and skirt the gravel parking area (parking is free).
The studios, suites and one- and two-bedroom cottages offer a pleasing mixture of contemporary and period styling, fresh fabrics, high-quality furniture, and simple window treatments
with wooden blinds. Updated as needed, the fabrics and furnishings are all in great shape. TVs, safes, refrigerators, robes and umbrellas are usual, and most of the oversized marble baths are thoughtfully fitted with hair dryers and adjustable magnifying mirrors in stall showers.
The minisuites are actually just oversized hotel rooms, but the full suites have separate bedrooms. The only difference between the premium and deluxe suites is that the former have private decks while the latter share. The three cottages are the most appealing. Gumbo Limbo has a sitting room with an armoire and TV, a marble-topped bar and a wrought-iron coffee table, a stylish bedroom, and a marble bath with a dressing room, phone and whirlpool tub.
Room service is offered at breakfast. One unit is wheelchair-accessible. Pets are not allowed.
This well-kept inn reflects the relaxed yet elegant pace that makes Key West so popular. It is one of the better middle-grade choices among the land-bound guesthouses here.
