This hotel has long been a staple of frugal travelers willing to overlook the small guest rooms and inconsistent maintenance. A notch or two above the nearby YMCA, it certainly has a lot of character, with a nifty French restaurant and a fun bar, all in a smart neighborhood (Stephen Sondheim lives two blocks away).
