A pleasant walled city in northwestern Algeria, Tlemcen (pop. 146,000) has nice plazas with large cafes, interesting stores, a museum, a pretty port, a large mosque, the Mansourah Tower and an old section that's delightful to walk through.
There's a strong Andalusian influence. Plan to stay half a day if you're in the area, but don't go far out of your way to see it.
75 mi/120 km southwest of Oran.
