Tucson has the typical range of accommodations found in most U.S. cities: hotels from deluxe to budget, bed-and-breakfasts, motels and campgrounds. Of historical note is the Hotel Congress, built in 1919. This downtown establishment shares its building with a dance club and a tearoom.
The city does stand out in its wide selection of top-flight resorts and spas and western-themed dude ranches. The resorts are typically located in scenic desert locations on the edge of the city (especially on the northeast side of town) and offer every amenity imaginable. The ranches, also found in lovely rural settings, often offer small adobe houses with unspoiled views. Ranch guests can enjoy horseback riding, hiking, tennis, swimming and various western activities, including sing-alongs and chuck-wagon cookouts.
Wherever you plan to stay, make reservations well in advance for the busy winter months (October-April)—particularly in February during the Gem and Mineral Show, when 20,000 rock hounds descend on the city. Reduced rates are offered at many of the resorts in the summer.
