Accommodations in the country range from cheap, small and very basic hotels to deluxe and very expensive hotels. The greatest variety is in Ashgabat. Outside the capital, selection is much slimmer. Be aware that water, fuel and electricity shortages can compromise comfort at any hotel, and also be aware that travelers without visas will be denied lodging and will be required to leave the country immediately.
Worth special mention is a surreal strip of foreign-built deluxe hotels just outside of Ashgabat. These properties come complete with swimming pools, air-conditioning and hot water, and usually a high price tag.
