This relatively small town is where Booker T. Washington founded Tuskegee Institute in 1881, the nation's first college established and operated by African Americans. Visit the Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site and be sure to see Washington's home, The Oaks. Don't miss the George Washington Carver Museum for a glimpse at the well-preserved laboratory—it displays some of his work with peanuts (which he made into chili sauce, wallboard and 300 other products). The courageous and highly decorated Tuskegee Airmen, the first all-black pilot unit (formed in World War II), trained at the college. Tuskegee is 30 mi/50 km east of Montgomery.
