Visitors to West Virginia will find a full range of accommodations, from budget lodgings to deluxe resorts and spas. Rates are generally lower than in many other U.S. destinations. Luxury hotels are few and chain motels common. Resorts are primarily in the ski areas. West Virginia offers some historic inns and restored hotels, and bed-and-breakfasts range from Victorian homes in Wheeling to small working farms. The extensive state park system includes several state-run resorts, which offer lodges with restaurants and a range of cabins. Amenities at the state-run resorts include swimming, fishing, boating, tennis, golf, racquetball, horseback riding and mineral-spring baths. Most are open year-round with higher rates spring through fall. There are also privately run resorts specializing in golf, skiing and spa relaxation. The granddaddy of luxury spa resorts is the Greenbrier at White Sulphur Springs. (During the Civil War, the hotel served as a Confederate headquarters and hospital.)
