Western Bermuda Travel Guide

Western Bermuda Guide Overview

Sometimes known as the West End, the parishes of Southampton and Sandys form the "hook" of Bermuda. Many of the sights lie on Somerset and Ireland islands, which are connected by short bridges to the main island. They're a half-hour drive from Hamilton. You can also take a ferry that runs from Hamilton to several stops on both islands. Plan on taking a day to see the area.

One stop to make in Southampton Parish is Gibb's Hill Lighthouse (about 5 mi/8 km southwest of Hamilton), the oldest cast-iron structure in the world. It offers fantastic views of the islands and ocean.

Once you cross Somerset Bridge, you're on Somerset Island. It's a charming and sleepy place. Take the time to visit Fort Scaur, which offers extensive views of Bermuda.

The road continues from Somerset and, after crossing two small islets, reaches Ireland Island—site of the Royal Navy Dockyard, one of Bermuda's premier attractions. There you will find the Bermuda Maritime Museum, the Commissioner's House and plenty of shops and restaurants.

Also, you can visit Dolphin Quest Lagoon at the Maritime Museum. The lagoon offers dolphin interactions and educational programs. Phone 441-234-4464. If you are ready for more walking, stretch your legs along the linear national park that was once part of Bermuda's now-defunct railway. The 21-mi-/34-km-long Bermuda Railway Trail takes you along the coast through tunnels and woodlands and past bird sanctuaries, old quarries and cemeteries. (Much of the railroad followed the coast because oceanside property was considered less desirable than inland acreage at the time it was built.) Pick up a copy of the Bermuda Railway Trail Guide at the tourist information booth at the Dockyard or at the Visitors Service Bureau.
