The home of McDaniel College (formerly known by the geographically inaccurate name Western Maryland College), Westminster is a pleasant college town in the state's central farm country (though these days the area seems to be growing housing developments in addition to produce). Among its attractions is the Carroll County Farm Museum, a mid-1800s farm that is the site of the Maryland Wine Festival in September. About 25 mi/40 km west of town (near Keymar) is Terra Rubra, birthplace of Francis Scott Key. A few miles/kilometers north of Westminster, near Pennsylvania on U.S. Highway 97, is Union Mills, which rates a short visit to the Union Mills Homestead and House Museum, a mill that has been in use since 1797. It's filled with antiques and Early American artifacts. Stone-ground cornmeal, buckwheat and whole-wheat flours are available for purchase. 30 mi/50 km northwest of Baltimore.
