Wind Cave includes 127 mi/115 km of passageways. The winds referred to in the name come from the cave's "breathing" as the air in the cave responds to changes in barometric pressure outside. The reddish-brown rock formations inside, called boxwork, look like stone honeycombs. Depending on when you visit, you can choose one of five cave tours, ranging from one to four hours in length and from a fairly easy hike to a strenuous spelunking adventure. Go early to avoid the crowds, and take a jacket, as the underground temperature is a consistent 53 F/12 C. Aboveground, the park encompasses grasslands, forests and a wealth of wildlife: pronghorn, bison, elk, eagles and wild turkeys, among others. 50 mi/80 km south of Rapid City.
