Along Highway 1 is Wiscasset, which bills itself as "the prettiest village in Maine." Beautifully maintained antique homes surround this Sheepscot River town 45 mi/75 km northeast of Portland. Several of these architectural gems are maintained by Historic New England (http://www.historicnewengland.org) and open to the public for tours. Other historic finds include plenty of antiques shops and a beautiful water view both upstream and down as you drive across the Highway 1 bridge.
